Understanding Personal Branding

Personal branding isn’t just a buzzword; it’s how you present yourself to the world, professionally and personally. Your photos should tell your story, reflect your values, and align with your goals. The key to nailing your personal branding photoshoot lies in preparation—and trust me, a little effort ahead of time makes a massive difference.

Why Preparing for Personal Branding Photoshoot Matters

Great photos don’t happen by chance. From mood to wardrobe, location, and even lighting, every detail impacts the final image. Whether your goal is to update your LinkedIn profile, refresh your website, or boost your social media presence, each element must work in harmony to tell your story.

Step 1: Define Your Brand

Before your shoot, take some time to reflect on your personal brand. Ask yourself:

  • Who are you? What are your values, passions, and goals?

  • What do you want to communicate? Are you approachable, innovative, professional, or creative?

  • Where will these photos be used? Your audience on LinkedIn might differ from a cover of your personal project on a specific subject.

💡 Pro Tip: Share your answers with your photographer—we’ll use this insight to guide the tone, mood, and style of your shoot.

Step 2: Plan Your Wardrobe

Your wardrobe plays a critical role in shaping your personal brand. Choose outfits that:

  • Reflect your personality and profession.

  • Align with your brand’s colours (if applicable).

  • Fit well and make you feel confident.

Avoid distracting patterns or overly bright colours that might clash with the shoot’s setting or lighting. Bring a few options, and don’t forget accessories—they can add depth and detail to your photos.

Step 3: Consider the Details

Small details can have a big impact on the final outcome. You might think its going a bit OTT - but trust, every little detail matters! For example, before my recent personal branding shoot with a young finance professional client, I asked about his favourite music and music that can act as perfect soundtrack to the personal brand he wanted to share across. He naturally picked genre outside my preference and confidently answered "Hard rock!" Not only did this set the mood, it also made the subject feel more at ease and confident.

Here are some things you may want to think about:

  • Grooming: Whether it’s a haircut, fresh nails, or minimal makeup, make sure you feel your best self, dressed like the personal brand you want to represent

  • Props: Is there a tool of your trade—a camera, sketchbook, laptop, or favourite mug—that can add personality to your shots?

  • Colours: Think about how your wardrobe and the backdrop complement each other.

💡 Pro Tip: Your photographer can guide you on which details will elevate your images. Don’t hesitate to ask!

Step 4: Choose the Right Locations

Where you shoot matters as much as what you wear. Are you looking for:

  • A clean, minimalist studio vibe?

  • A bustling city backdrop that screams “go-getter”?

  • A cosy café or a park to reflect your approachable side?

The setting should reinforce your brand’s message. When you first inquire for a shoot with me, we will of course discuss the location and more, where I'll be happy to advise - but its always good to have your input for true collaboration and authenticity to the final result!

Step 5: Practise Posing - If You Like!

Feeling nervous about posing? Don’t worry—you’re not alone! Here’s how to ease into it:

  • Stand in front of a mirror and experiment with angles.

  • Research poses online that suit your vibe (hint: Pinterest is great for inspiration).

  • Trust your photographer to guide you—they know how to get your best angles.

Step 6: Communicate with Your Photographer

Your photographer isn’t just there to take pictures; they’re your partner in bringing your vision to life. Share:

  • Your goals for the photos.

  • Examples of what you like (or don’t like).

  • Any insecurities you might have—they’ll help you feel at ease.

Building this trust is key to a successful shoot.

Step 7: Relax and Have Fun

Yes, a photoshoot can be fun! Remember, these photos are for you. You’ve done the prep, and now it’s time to let your personality and expertise shine. Nothing looks better on camera than you feeling yourself!

Bringing It All Together

Every aspect of your photoshoot—from the lighting to the location—tells a story about you. The more intentional you are about the details, the more impactful the results will be.
