They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but when it comes to personal branding, it might just be worth even more. I've recently become pretty fascinated with the topic (see previous blogs on the matter!), and this hyperfixation has led me down several rabbit holes, with the aim to grasp the concept. Instead, they confused me further and left me with more questions than answers...
Luckily, I know someone, who is a true expert on the matter, having set up a business designed to help people like me and you demystify personal branding, and rapidly amassed her LinkedIn following through helpful tips and stories to put everything into context. Let me introduce you to Kristina Klenina, a founder and CEO of PB Founding, and my dear friend for well over a decade. To help me finally get to the bottom of personal branding, I've called on her help like people of Gotham called on Batman. Whether you’re a creative entrepreneur, a professional climbing the ladder, or someone stepping into a new role, this conversation is packed with actionable takeaways to elevate your brand. Let’s get into it!
So, Kristina, please tell me - what on earth is personal branding?
KK: "Personal branding is the intentional process of shaping how the world perceives you. It’s about showcasing your unique qualities, skills, and values in a way that creates trust and builds connections. Think of it as your professional reputation meets your authentic self."
I see! And is that what attracted you to personal branding?
KK: "Everyone is unique and has a story to tell. Personal branding is a way to share that story with the world. It allows you to take control of your narrative. Others should pay attention because it’s no longer just about skills; people want to work with those they trust and relate to. Your brand builds that bridge."
"Others should pay attention [to personal branding] because it’s no longer just about skills; people want to work with those they trust and relate to."
If someone wanted to start their personal branding journey, where should they begin?
As a true professional, and type A person like me (we are friends after all!), she breaks it down to three comsiderations.
KK:
"Define Your Unique Value: What makes you stand out? Reflect on your skills, passions, and how you can serve others.
Optimize Your Online Presence: Make sure your LinkedIn, website, or social media aligns with the message you want to send.
Be Consistent in Showing Up Daily: Consistency is the key to trust. Whether it’s posting, engaging, or sharing value, small daily actions build momentum and establish your presence over time."
From talking to others, and my own experience, promoting yourself and being seen is tough for a lot of us - what’s your advice to overcome this mental block?
KK: "Start small and remind yourself that sharing your story isn’t about bragging; it’s about helping others. Focus on the value you bring and celebrate progress instead of perfection. Practicing regularly can also help normalize the process."
Tell me a little about personal brand experts such as yourself, and how they can help.
KK: "Experts guide you through the often-overwhelming process of creating a cohesive, impactful personal brand. From clarifying your message to designing a strategy for your online presence, they help you save time and build a brand that truly resonates with your audience."
Who’s your favourite person or inspiration currently nailing personal branding?
KK: "Leila Hormozi. She is unapologetically herself while delivering immense value. Her consistency, storytelling, and clear niche make her brand unforgettable."
As a photographer, I have to ask - how do visuals play into someone’s personal brand?
KK: "Visuals are your first impression. A high-quality headshot, consistent brand colors, and well-crafted imagery instantly communicate professionalism and trustworthiness. People often remember what they see before what they hear or read, so investing in quality visuals is crucial."
"I truly admire people who have great taste."
