Location vs. Studio Photoshoot: a Definitive Guide on Choosing the Perfect Setting

Planning your photoshoot and not sure whether to go for studio or location backdrop? Should we stay in the comfort of a studio, where everything is perfectly controlled? Or should we head outdoors and let nature set the scene? Decisions, decisions... But don’t worry, I’ve got your back. I am Valerie of VG Portraits, a London-based portrait photographer, who works both in studio and on locations, let me break it down for you, so you can figure out which setting fits your vision best.

Studio Portraits: Creative Control, Comfort, and Consistency

Let’s start with the studio. If I'm perfectly honest, I was not the biggest fan until recently, when I finally saw everything a studio had to offer that outdoors simply could not. Of course, I couldn't show it any better than a pros and cons list, so here we go!

Pros:

  • Lighting Perfection: In the studio, photographers can control the lights completely, which means you’ll always be shown in the best light—literally. No harsh shadows, no squinting in the sun (though it can heat up in the warmer months!) After tinkering with it to find what works best for you, we get it just right, every time.

  • No Weather Drama: It is no secret London weather can be... let’s say, unpredictable. The studio gives us a cozy space where rain and wind can’t touch us. Here you can feel fully secure that nothing will ruin the fits you prepared specifically for the shoot.

  • Versatile Backdrops: Whether you want something classic and elegant or bold and colorful, we can switch things up with ease. One minute you’re in front of a chic black backdrop, and the next, you’re rocking a pop of color to match your mood board.

Cons:

  • Less Natural: While studio shoots are polished and precise, they don’t have that organic feel you get from real-world locations. If you’re after something with a bit more “life” to it, the studio might feel a bit too controlled.

  • Limited Movement: You’ll be working within the confines of a single space, so if you love walking, running, or twirling around, we won’t have as much room to play with. But hey, we can still get creative!

On-Location Portraits: Dynamic, Natural, and Full of Personality

Now, if you’re the type who feels inspired by the outdoors or you want something a bit more authentic, a location shoot might be your dream come true. After all, London offers a great variety of backdrops: from iconic landmarks to peaceful parks, the city can truly provide us endless creative possibilities! Shooting outdoors has always been my favourite - that is of course when you catch London on a good day... So here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Natural Light Magic: There’s something special about natural light. Whether it’s soft, golden hour sunlight or a moody, overcast sky, location shoots bring that natural glow that’s impossible to recreate indoors. It’s flattering, real, and alive.

  • Authentic Backdrops: The great outdoors (or the city) becomes part of your portrait’s story. Whether it’s the streets of London, your favorite park, or even your own backyard, these locations add character and personality that studio settings just can’t replicate.

  • Freedom to Move: If you love being in action—walking, laughing, dancing—location shoots give you the space to move and interact with the environment. Those candid, fun shots? They come naturally in this kind of setting.

Cons:

  • Weather’s in Charge: Outdoor shoots are a little at the mercy of Mother Nature. A sudden downpour or strong winds might throw us off track, but hey, that’s why we always have a backup plan!

  • Lighting Can Be Tricky: While natural light can be amazing, it’s also unpredictable. The sun moves, clouds shift, and shadows come into play. But don’t worry, I’m keeping an eye and adjusting where needed to make the most of what we’re working with!

So, How Do You Choose?

If you’re still on the fence about where to shoot, here are a few tips to help:

  • Think About the Vibe You Want: Looking for something polished and editorial? The studio is your best bet. But if you want a more relaxed, lifestyle feel, on-location is the way to go.

  • Consider Your Comfort Zone: Do you feel more comfortable in a private, quiet space? Or do you feel energized by being outdoors? Your comfort is key to feeling and looking your best during the shoot.

  • What’s the Occasion?: For professional headshots, the clean, consistent look of a studio might be just what you need. But if it’s a lifestyle portrait, or a fun activity on a sunny day in London, the energy of an outdoor location can bring your photos to life in a whole new way.
